What Are Sorority Recommendations? Do I Really Have to Have Them?

A recommendation, or “rec“, is a letter of introduction that a sorority alum writes on your behalf and sends to her sorority’s chapter at your university. Before you even arrive for recruitment, the sorority has had an opportunity to “meet you.”

Some sororities require a recommendation for a potential member, before they can extend a bid to her. Different chapters on different campuses will have different policies on whether they require a recommendation letter in order to keep inviting you to later rounds of recruitment events. To be on the safe side, you should try your best to secure recommendation letters for all the sororities that have chapters on the university campus you will be attending.

It is acceptable to ask sorority alumnae that you know if they will provide a letter of recommendation. Usually, if you mention to an alumna that you are going through sorority recruitment, she will volunteer to send a rec for you.

And, the best way to meet sorority alumnae is to register with FATAAP! We will host a Forum on April 21st in Frisco where you can meet sorority alumnae, so get on the list now to find out the details.
