Facts for Parents: What If I Wasn’t Greek in College?

Movies and television have spread the myth that sorority membership must be inherited, that those who have Greek alumni/ae in their family are more likely to be invited to join than those who do not.

Not even one iota true.

A prospective member whose mother, sister or grandmother was in a sorority is called a legacy. The sorority where she has family ties will definitely want to make a special effort to meet her — but she isn’t guaranteed a bid, nor is it guaranteed that the same sorority that was right for her family member, will be right for her. And a legacy to one sorority does not create a “better” or preferential recruitment experience, since there will be many other sororities on any given campus.

Plus, legacies are in the minority. Most students going through sorority recruitment do not have a family connection. Most Greek students today are the first in their family to join a sorority or fraternity.

So, if you were not in a sorority, you have nothing to fear. Your daughter’s experience will be just like the dozens of other potential members!
